Employee Profile: Anthony Smith

Tuesday, July 28th, 2015

Anthony Smith from AMP ResearchMeet Anthony Smith, AMP Research’s Engineering Director. He has a passion for engineering, loves to surf, and is a key part in our company’s innovative products. He’s worked here for 16 years and has had his hands in everything the company has produced since: AMP Research PowerSteps, BedXTender, and AMP Research fuel doors. The first product he worked on, however, was one of our early BedXTender designs and fuel doors. However, he notes that once the company started developing our iconic PowerStep, most of his time has gone to that.

Anthony went to school for mechanical engineering at California State University, Long Beach, but had other interests in art an mathematics as well.

“I think diversifying your studies is healthy for the creative side of engineers,” he said. “I think advanced mathematics helps develop a person’s creative problem solving skills, and studying fine arts helps develop an awareness of form, visual balance, and overall aesthetics.”

Leading the Engineering Team is no small task, and Anthony pushes for innovation and quality with every product AMP Research produces. One of Anthony’s big strengths is in kinematics, which is the kind of mechanics that focuses on motion. Considering every product AMP Research offers has some form of motion, he gets to exercise this discipline often. He admits, however, that product design, another area of his focus, is probably the most fun. But there are a lot of moving parts in creating and producing product, and it all needs to be carried out to produce a quality product.

So what’s the best part about working for AMP Research?

AMP Research PowerStep

“I like the challenging opportunities that AMP Research and Lund International bring. With a family of product so large and enough resources to tackle the challenges, it’s nice to be a part of such an atmosphere that breeds innovation.”

Another thing Anthony mentions is the diverse group at AMP Research and Lund International has as a whole.

“There are a variety of passions—sports, hobbies, family, whatever the love might be—it is encouraged, and there is a lot of positive energy that spills into the work we do,” he said. Anthony said the feedback from the customers pushes the company and its employees to make the product great.

“We love our products, but we also love the community we feel with our customers.”

Outside of work, one of Anthony’s passions is surfing. The amazing photo below shows him riding a wave in Tavarua, Fiji in April, 2015. He says he draws passion from his love of surfing.

We’re proud to have Anthony on the AMP Research team and in the Lund International family of brands. His work and passion speak for themselves both on the job an on a surfboard!

AMP Research PowerStep XL

AMP Research has added a new model to its lineup of PowerStep™ electric deployable running boards. The PowerStep XL™ features an additional 3-inches of drop compared to standard PowerStep boards, which makes them ideal for lifted vehicles. This 3-inch drop comes courtesy of an integrated aluminum rail that not only looks great, but also offers additional durability when the steps are retracted. The PowerStep XL also features easy installation with hassle-free plug-and-play wiring. Simply attach the boards and plug the wiring harness into the vehicle’s OBDII port.

The PowerStep XL allows easier entry and exit of lifted trucks, yet still retracts and stows neatly along the vehicle’s rocker panels. Already an award winner, the PowerStep XL won Best New Exterior Accessory at the 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas where it was first shown to the public.

Like other PowerStep models, the PowerStep XL features an integrated LED light system for excellent low-light visibility. The rails are constructed of sturdy 6063 marine-grade aluminum and wear an attractive, corrosion-resistant black textured coating. For extra strength, the boards’ components are made from die-cast aluminum alloy with an anodized PTFE-coated (polytetrafluoroethylene) military-spec finish for excellent corrosion resistance. Precision stainless steel pivot pins ensure rock-solid stability with a 600 lb. capacity, and maintenance-free, self-lubricating bushings ensure years of all-weather performance.

Invented, engineered, and built in the USA, these premium boards are backed by a five year/60,000 mile limited warranty.

Big Red

Texas businessman Gary Koenig will be presented the keys to the ProPickup-sponsored “Big Red” sweepstake’s dually – a 2008 GMC Sierra 3500 Crew Cab 4×4 work truck with more than $25,000 in parts and accessories including AMP Research PowerStep™ running boards and BedStep® bed access steps. Koenig does a lot of business in the greater Houston area providing tire repair services and field repairs for construction contractors and oil companies. “The more I read on the ProPickup website about how it’s equipped, the more I realize it’s got everything I need for my tire business. And how the truck is setup will make a fine service rig for this area,” says Koenig, who first saw the truck on display at the ProPickup Truck Expo in Dallas and again at the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

Big Red has been the perfect platform to demonstrate AMP’s hard-working truck accessories to business owners like Gary,” says Mark Wronski, Director Marketing for AMP Research. This is the third annual sweepstakes truck giveaway by ProPickup magazine, which is focused on work trucks and accessories. “Giving away a truck each year is a highlight of our staff. But we couldn’t build the trucks without the support of our great sponsors and advertisers like AMP Research that make it all possible,” says Bruce Smith, ProPickup’s founding editor.

The First Great American Giveaway Winner Announced

Monday, April 1st, 2013

Tustin, Calif. – April 1, 2013 – Earlier this year, we teamed up with Motorz to introduce a very special contest called The AMP Research Great American Giveaway. Through this unique contest launched on February 1, entrants were asked to provide information about an exemplary American who owns a pickup truck and goes the extra mile to serve family, friends, community and/or country for a chance to win an AMP Research PowerStep™ system, and a choice of one of three other eligible products from AMP Research. The winner of the first contest is Bobbi Jo Wnuk of Bonduel, Wisconsin who will receive the AMP Research PowerStep system and the BedXtender HD™.

Ms. Wnuk, entered by Jason Heinz, drives a 2009 Ford F-150 and does a great deal to help the Special Education Department at the Wisconsin Bonduel School District. She also helps with homecare for the elderly and the disabled in the community, heads up a benefit for a neighbor fighting cancer, and serves as a volunteer with Bridge The Gap for Autism and the Autism Society of Northeast Wisconsin (both non-profits). Along the way, she puts her F-150 through some rough Wisconsin driving conditions.

“We received so many excellent entries that it was very tough for us to choose just one winner,” stated Mark Wronski, marketing director, AMP Research. “Bobbi’s entry stood out because of the extensive volunteer work she does, the way she uses her truck, and the benefits the AMP Research products can provide in making her life and her volunteer work a little bit easier. Bobbi is truly a great American, and we are thrilled to be able to award her this prize package.”

“This contest was developed to improve the lives of truck owners that help others,” stated Chris Duke, host and executive producer, Motorz. “We want to thank the people who make a difference, to recognize them and support the good work they are doing.”

To submit an entry for a great American in your life, visit for details and official rules. The next contest will run April 15 – June 1, 2013.
